DAY 12

A blind psychic brings a cursed object to the site of her twin’s murder in hopes to discover the truth behind her death.

Emerging Irish filmmaker Damian McCarthy made a splash this year with his ghostly sophomore feature ODDITY (2024), a tense tale of murder, deceit and the supernatural. McCarthy weaves a spine-tingling whodunit, presented in a non-linear fashion, edging your anxiety throughout.

The film opens with a terrifying predicament. Home alone at night, Dani is frightened by a strange man outside her front door warning that somebody has entered the house without her seeing. We then jump forward an entire year, where we learn she was murdered. But how?

Dani’s husband Ted has cozied up in the same house with new girlfriend, Yana. But an unexpected visit from Dani’s twin Darcy, a collector and psychic medium, disrupts their evening plans. She brings with her what she described as a gift from a witch – a human sized wooden doll that may or may not be moving on its own. Darcy’s presence soon stirs up Dani’s spirit, frightening Yana and revealing the dreadful secrets within the house.

I screened this for a group of friends and this movie had us jolted, screaming out loud on multiple occasions. ODDITY should make your watchlist this season. It’s clever, dripping in gothic vibes and will have you sleeping with the lights on.
